Life in Bruderheim is guided by a Town Council that consists of a Mayor and six Council members, each of whom are elected members of the community. Council members serve as a valuable resource to Bruderheim residents, working to ensure they enjoy a high quality of life and that Bruderheim's complex issues are resolved. In order to do this effectively, Council members spend a great deal of time studying community problems, preparing for formal Council meetings, speaking with citizens, attending committee and board meetings, and attending local events.

Mayor Karl Hauch

Mayor Karl Hauch was born and raised an Alberta boy. Having grown up in the small-town setting of New Sarepta, he is familiar with small-town living. He and his wife, Bonnie, greatly enjoy the comfortable 'country' feel of Bruderheim and are happy to have the chance to raise their family of three children here  -  Lisa, who now lives in Lamont, Caleb, and Sarah. Karl has worked all of his adult life in industrial settings from CIL, AT Plastics to Shell Canada Energy, and has been a Turnaround Planner at Shell for over four years now. He enjoys anything related to the outdoors, from hockey to fishing and anything in between. Having served Bruderheim in a number of capacities over the past ten years - through the Bruderheim Moravian Church Unified Board, as soccer and hockey coach, as a Fire Department  volunteer, and more - he is a strong believer that "volunteers are the lifeblood of any community". He believes that "the future for Bruderheim looks bright" and is excited about the possibilities!

Councillor George Hargesheimer

Councillor Hargesheimer is currently serving his first term on Bruderheim Council and is appointed to the Lamont County Housing Foundation and the Bruderheim Lions Club. Born in Edmonton, George graduated from Lamont High School in 1974 and went on to become a Journeyman Electrician and Journeyman Welder. In addition, he was a volunteer firefighter in the region for over 24 years. George enjoys fishing, hunting and golf with his friends and family, which includes his wife Debbie of 23 years, son Michael and daughters Breanna, Angela and Christa. He says, "If you can't do the job right, don't start!"

Councillor Shelley Ross

Councillor Shelley Ross is currently in her fourth term on Council, and is appointed to the Community Services Advisory Board, the Lamont Library Board and the Northern Lights System Library Board. Born in Trenton, Ontario and a former resident of Nova Scotia, she has found her true home in Bruderheim, where she loves to volunteer her time for a number of events and different organizations. She has worked for Elk Island Public School as an Educational Assistant for the last 13 years. She and her husband Bryan of 22 years share a daughter, Breana, and a grandson, Mykel. Her favourite things to do include reading, taking long walks, camping with friends and family, and travelling. The adage she lives by? "Live, laugh, love."

Councillor Dave McCormack

Councillor Dave McCormack was born in Irvine Ayrshire, Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1958. He and his wife Linda of 29 years have called Bruderheim home for the past 28 years, grateful for the small town atmosphere to raise their four children, Heather, Jeffrey, Ian and Kyle. In addition to his lifetime of experience in the Pay & Benefit Administration field, he has also served on a Local School Board of the Northland School Division and ran a successful retail business for five years.  Dave has been a Councillor since early 2009 and currently represents Council on the Assessment Review Board, the Lamont County Waste Management Commission, the Vegreville Water Corridor Commission, and the Fort Air Partnership. He also serves our community through the Bruderheim Lions Club as their secretary. He's a willing participant in many town events and is happy to promote Bruderheim at trade shows throughout the County. In his leisure time, Dave enjoys competitive bowling, researching family genealogy and cross-county skiing. He strongly supports recreational activities for all Bruderheim residents. His motto? "Don't worry, be happy!"

Councillor Shayne Milliken

Councillor Shayne Milliken is serving his first term on Council and has been appointed to the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, Lamont County Community Adult Learning Council and Norquest College Community Adult Education Council. He was born in Ontario and has lived in Bruderheim for 16 years, being an active volunteer in local events, including sitting on the Bruderheim FCSS Board as a Youth Representative and Vice Chairperson. He is currently a member of the Bruderheim Fire Department, and is hoping that the experience he gets there, along with going back to school for Emergency Medical Technician, will help him in a career with a fire department later in life. It is Shayne's hope that Council will continue to be as transparent as possible to the community and will provide various new services and opportunities for all citizens. Shayne is ecstatic to be given the opportunity to sit on Council, and hopes that this Council can achieve great things for our community.

Councillor Wayne Olechow

Councillor Wayne Olechow is serving his first term on Council and is currently appointed to the Lamont County Regional Economic Development Board, Bruderheim Parent Advisory Council, and the Local Public Works Committee. He grew up in the Town of Bruderheim and was always active in local activities. After moving away for a period of time, he and wife Stephanie of eight years decided to move back to Bruderheim to raise their children. Wayne has a strong background in retail management but has recently left the work force to be a stay-at-home dad to his two children, Claire and Cameron. As a youngster, Wayne was always active in sports, and now continues to golf, play hockey and skate with his children. He is currently the vice president of the Bruderheim Preschool Association and a member of the Lion's Club. Wayne is excited to have the opportunity to sit on Council, and plans to be actively involved with his fellow Councillors in introducing activities and services to include all residents of Bruderheim.

A Day in the Life of a Bruderheim Council Member-Some Notes…

  • Don't quit your day job - yes, on top of all they do for the Town, Council members hold regular full-time jobs, too.
  • Who knew you'd still have homework at this age? In preparation for Town Council meetings, Council members must read through a hefty package of information that provides the necessary background to understand the issues facing Bruderheim.
  • Better hope you're good at math-so that you can figure out how to fix that million dollar problem with just $100,000!
  • What's it like to make a difference? An excellent question to ask a Council member the next time you see one (see the photo above so you'll recognize them).

Thanks Council!
